The Thairath Daily Implements Digital Archiving & Workflow
The Thairath Daily is the largest daily newspaper in Thailand with a circulation of over 1,000,000 copies per day.
During the year 2004, a full-fledged FotoWare multimedia archiving and digital workflow system from FotoWare A.S. (Norway) was implemented at the Thairath Daily with great success.
The system automates the complete workflow and standardizes the picture formats, quality and descriptions. The picture workflow is taken care of from the input in the photo lab, scanning lab and remote office departments all the way to the daily picture processing, output and long term archiving in the library department.
Mr. Thanin Teranasarn, prepress Manager at Thairath Daily says, that before they implemented the FotoWare system, Thairath did not have one common system and standard user interface to handle the retrieval and processing of pictures, text and other digital media.
Now with the new system the efficiency of our daily operations has substantially increased since we can provide the users with one singe system, standard and interface for processing all media assets and digital workflow operations.
Thanin continues that since the FotoWare system fully supports both Thai and English language in all important areas such as input of text files, captioning and description of pictures and the full text search, it is now very easy and fast to search and retrieve data in Thai as well as in English.
All search, retrieval, forwarding and processing of pictures and data is now handled directly from the user's desktop, using a standard Internet browser to access and control the operations in the FotoWare system.
Even in archives containing hundreds of thousands of documents, the search response is within seconds and the retrieval and forwarding of selected pictures in the digital workflow can easily be performed instantly.
With the FotoWare system, the multimedia library has also been fully integrated into the editorial and production workflow environment. The users can search, retrieve and forward the digital media to be forwarded and processed in other departments according to preset specifications and instructions. The complete library, of pictures, text and clippings, book information and personalities, accumulated since the beginning of the nineties, was formerly kept in several outdated archiving systems and have now all been converted to FotoWare.

The Philippine Star Automates Picture Editorial Workflow
The Philippine Star is one of the 3 major daily newspaper in the Philippines with a total circulation of 300 000 copies.
During 2004, the Philippine Star implemented a picture editorial, workflow and archiving system from FotoWare with great success.
FotoWare completely automates the picture workflow between the photo department, scanning department, color lab, editorial and layout, all integrated into one common digital workflow. The system takes care of input, description, selection, workflow operations and a fully automated picture library.
Philippine Star has been using the system for the last 6 months and the speed and efficiency have been dramatically improved. According to the prepress manager, Mr. Ferdie Pajarillo, the production time has been cut by at least 1-2 hours. Ferdie says that he is receiving the first edition in his hand 2 hours earlier than before and due to the new streamlined digital workflow the time saving in some sections of the newspaper is almost up to 4-5 hours.
Miss Amy Pamintuan, Executive Editor at The Philippine Star is also very satisfied with the new system and the increased speed, flexibility and efficiency.
Today the editors can receive and process RGB pictures directly from the wire services, the provinces or from the local photographers and 2 minutes later have the picture ready in the page layout application in CMYK or BW, color corrected, separated and converted to the required file format.
If the editor or layout operator needs to change the size or crop of the already paginated picture, they can simply reprocess the original RGB directly from their desktop FotoStation Pro picture browser. The picture will get back to the layout operator in CMYK or BW, ready to be placed in the page within one minute and without any risk of decreased quality.
This, says Amy, gives us new opportunities to make changes or add in late coming news into the publication in the last minutes close to deadline.

Binuscan Color Management to The Philippine Star
The Philippine Star is one of the 3 major daily newspaper in the Philippines with a total circulation of 300 000 copies.
The Philippine Star has implemented a complete color management and color workflow solution from Binuscan (Monaco).
The prepress color management operations are fully automated and integrated into the FotoWare digital workflow system.
The Color Management is controlled by a server based Binuscan software application, where most of the color correction is automated by the Binuscan IPM server. The picture quality has improved dramatically in the whole publication and the front page is today of outstanding quality among the newspapers in the Philippines.
The Philippine Star is very satisfied with the fact that he no longer has to face "unpleasant" surprises with regards to the picture quality in the final prints. Mr. Ferdie Pajarillo, prepress manager at The Philippine Star says that the quality is consistent, and I don't have to wake up in the morning anymore, worrying about ugly pictures on the front page hitting my face at the breakfast table and knowing that I have some explanations to do when I come to the office. The quality improvements and increased consistency has been possible using a controlled and profiled Binuscan RGB workflow, and server based color correction, separation and conversion which minimize the effects of unpredictable and operator dependent operations.
